The chat window appears in the bottom left corner of the screen. By default it has tabs for General, Combat and Tell Messages. Right-click in a tab to customize it, or click + in the top right corner of the window to create a new tab.

General displays most of the chat channels by default. Combat logs any combat action nearby. Tell Messages displays only private chat messages.

Type in chat by clicking the field at the bottom of the chat window or by pressing Enter. Once your message has been entered, press Enter again to send the message. Change the active channel for outgoing messages by clicking the active channel in the bottom left corner of the window.

Specify the recipient of a message by using a channel command at the start of a message. Commonly used channels include /say, /group, /raid and /tell playername.
